Happy Monday, puzzlers!

Hoping that the heat and humidity is not quite unbearable yet where you are, because I can barely breathe when I walk outside…it is G-R-O-S-S. Throw some scattered thunderstorms in, and the Mid-Atlantic is just not a happy place right now. I guess being in a cubicle during these times isn’t so bad after all!

Before proceeding, I’d just like to take a moment to reflect on the recent deaths of two incredible puzzlers, Thomas Gazzola and Leslie Billig, both of which were premature and heartrending. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting either individual, but they were members of this incredible community that I’ve felt so well-connected to in these past few years; it’s as if I’ve spoken with each of them regularly, and they are so deeply missed. Thoughts and prayers go out to their families and other companions during these difficult times.

While the above should be anything but glossed over, I do believe it’s time to switch gears: If I may say, I was pretty proud of how today’s puzzle turned out. I was able to fill the entire grid–without any autofill use–in under an hour, which surprised the heck out of me! The seed entries, as expected, were the crossing 33A/15D, but every other colorful entry was simply something I experimented with that worked well on the first go. Seriously. Consider this to be a flukey effort on my part! Well, actually, I don’t know what you think about it yet…perhaps entries I enjoyed filling (18A, 53A, 13D) may suck to all of you. I anxiously await your feedback, and I hope you find this to be a quality freestyle!

Speaking of quality freestyles, I’d like to take one final moment to promote this freestyle here, made by Chris King on his site. Seriously, this guy’s got some constructing chops, and the puzzle above is just a great example! Check it out, and follow his site if you haven’t already!
